When Something Seems Off, You Need Answers Fast

When your pet is sick, or when something just seems off, your instinct is to want answers as quickly as possible. That is exactly what in-house veterinary diagnostics are designed to deliver. At Madison Veterinary Hospital, our diagnostic capabilities allow our veterinarians to run a comprehensive range of lab tests right here in our facility, getting results in minutes rather than days and allowing us to move forward with a treatment plan during the same visit in many cases.

Diagnostics are not only for sick pets. Baseline lab values established during wellness visits give us critical reference points for detecting changes over time. Pre-surgical bloodwork tells us your pet is safe to undergo anesthesia. Senior wellness panels catch organ dysfunction in its earliest, most treatable stages. At every phase of your pet’s life, good diagnostic medicine is the backbone of good clinical care.

For more than 50 years, Madison Veterinary Hospital has invested in the tools and expertise to provide thorough, accurate diagnostics for pets throughout the Madison Heights area and beyond. When your pet needs answers, we are equipped to find them.

Why In-House Diagnostics Matter

The difference between in-house and reference lab diagnostics is primarily speed. When we can run bloodwork, a urinalysis, or a fecal test in our own facility and have results within the hour, we can discuss findings, adjust treatment, and in many cases begin therapy the same day. For a pet who is acutely ill, that speed is not a convenience. It is a meaningful clinical advantage.

That said, not every test can or should be run in-house. We partner with a trusted reference laboratory for specialized diagnostics, culture and sensitivity testing, advanced endocrine panels, and other tests that require equipment or expertise beyond the scope of an in-house analyzer. We will always be transparent about where your pet’s samples are going and how long results are expected to take.

Our Diagnostic Capabilities

Complete Blood Count (CBC)

A CBC evaluates the three major cell types in the blood: red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Red blood cell parameters tell us about oxygen-carrying capacity and can identify anemia and its potential causes. White blood cell counts and differentials point to infection, inflammation, immune disease, or certain cancers. Platelet counts assess clotting ability. The CBC is one of the most commonly ordered and most informative tests in veterinary medicine.

Blood Chemistry Panel

A chemistry panel evaluates organ function and metabolic status. Key values include kidney function markers (BUN and creatinine), liver enzymes and function markers, blood glucose, electrolytes, total protein, and more. This panel is recommended before anesthesia, as part of senior wellness care, during illness evaluation, and for monitoring pets on long-term medications that may affect organ function.

Thyroid Testing

Hypothyroidism in dogs and hyperthyroidism in cats are among the most common endocrine disorders we diagnose and manage. Thyroid level testing is recommended as part of senior wellness care for cats beginning around age seven and should be considered in dogs with unexplained weight gain, lethargy, or skin and coat changes.

Urinalysis

Urine tells a remarkable story about kidney function, hydration status, urinary tract health, and systemic disease. A complete urinalysis includes assessment of urine concentration, pH, protein, glucose, blood, cells, and the presence of crystals or bacteria. Urinalysis is a routine part of wellness care for senior pets and an essential diagnostic tool when urinary symptoms are present.

Urine Culture and Sensitivity

When a urinary tract infection is suspected or confirmed, a urine culture identifies the specific bacteria responsible and tests which antibiotics are most effective against it. This ensures targeted, appropriate antibiotic therapy rather than broad-spectrum guesswork.

Fecal Testing and Parasite Screening

Annual fecal exams are recommended for all pets, even those who appear healthy and live primarily indoors. Intestinal parasites, including roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, giardia, and coccidia, are common, can cause significant illness, and some can be transmitted to people. We also screen for heartworm disease, tick-borne illnesses, and other vector-borne diseases appropriate to our region.

Cytology

When a skin mass, lump, ear discharge, or fluid accumulation is present, cytology, the microscopic evaluation of cells collected by fine needle aspiration or smear, can provide rapid, valuable information about the nature of the abnormality. While cytology does not always provide a definitive diagnosis, it frequently guides our next steps and helps determine whether further diagnostics or surgical removal is warranted.

Rapid In-House Testing

We maintain in-house tests for common conditions including parvovirus, giardia, feline leukemia and FIV, heartworm disease, and certain tick-borne diseases. These rapid tests provide results within minutes and are invaluable during urgent or emergency evaluations.

Pre-Anesthetic Bloodwork

Before any procedure requiring anesthesia, we run bloodwork to evaluate organ function and confirm your pet is a safe candidate. This is a non-negotiable part of our surgical and dental protocol, and we are happy to explain the specific values we are looking for and what they mean.

Diagnostics for Every Life Stage

Puppies and Kittens

Early fecal testing, heartworm and FeLV/FIV screening, and baseline bloodwork before the first anesthetic procedure establish a healthy foundation for your new pet’s life.

Adult Pets

Annual fecal exams and heartworm testing are the baseline for healthy adult pets. Periodic bloodwork panels, typically every one to two years for healthy adults, help us detect emerging trends before they become clinical problems. These conversations happen naturally during your pet’s annual wellness exam.

Senior Pets

For pets seven years and older, we recommend a comprehensive senior wellness panel at each biannual exam. This panel typically includes a CBC, full chemistry profile, thyroid level, urinalysis, and blood pressure measurement. Early detection of kidney disease, liver disease, diabetes, thyroid dysfunction, and other conditions allows us to intervene sooner and manage these conditions more effectively.

Pets on Long-Term Medications

Many medications used to manage chronic conditions, including non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, steroids, phenobarbital, and others, require periodic monitoring of organ function. We will recommend a monitoring schedule appropriate to your pet’s specific medications and health status.

When Diagnostics Lead Somewhere Else

Sometimes lab results point to a condition that requires imaging, a specialist consultation, or additional diagnostics to fully characterize. Our in-house diagnostic capabilities work in direct coordination with our radiology and ultrasound services, creating a seamless path from lab findings to imaging when needed. When specialist involvement is warranted, we will make that referral promptly and communicate with the specialist team on your behalf.

Frequently Asked Questions

In-house tests, including CBC, chemistry panels, urinalysis, and rapid screening tests, are typically available within 30 to 60 minutes, often during the same appointment. Reference laboratory results for specialized tests typically take one to three business days, depending on the test.

Yes, and here is why. Many disease processes, including early kidney disease, liver dysfunction, and endocrine disorders, do not produce obvious external symptoms until they are fairly advanced. Bloodwork during wellness visits catches these changes early, when intervention is most effective and treatment options are greatest.

Hyperthyroidism is extremely common in older cats and is one of those conditions that cats compensate for remarkably well until it becomes severe. By the time a cat looks obviously ill from hyperthyroidism, significant damage may already be occurring. Screening cats beginning around age seven allows us to catch and treat this condition while it is still manageable.

A CBC evaluates the cellular components of blood, including red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. A chemistry panel evaluates organ function and metabolic markers through the liquid portion of blood. Together, they give us a much more complete picture of your pet’s health than either test alone.

For most chemistry panels, a four to eight hour fast is recommended to prevent lipemia (fat in the blood) from interfering with certain values. Your veterinarian or our team will let you know whether fasting is required before your pet’s appointment.

Your veterinarian will discuss any abnormal values with you directly, explain what they mean in the context of your pet’s overall health, and recommend next steps. Depending on the finding, that might mean a recheck test in a few weeks, additional diagnostics, a change in medication, or a specialist referral. We believe in clear, honest communication about test results, and we will make sure you understand what we found and what we recommend.
